Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’re all too familiar with Disney’s live-action adaptations of their animated classics. And honestly, there was never really a lot of interest in my part to see the live action versions of the animated movies I grew up with. Just seemed off, or a cash grab… just didn’t garner a lot of interest with me.
But sounds like next up for the live-action treatment is 2002’s, LILO & STITCH, and I am super into this. And even more so that Variety is reporting that CRAZY RICH ASIANS director, Jon M. Chu is in talks to direct.
Again, super into this. Not sure why? Maybe because it’s not a fairy tale? But if you’re not familiar with the original animated movie, it was written and directed by Chris Sanders (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON movies) and Dean DeBlois. The movie itself focused on a young Hawaiian girl, Lilo, and her teenage sister as they adapt a blue alien named Stitch.
In true Disney fashion, at least the animated features I grew up with, LILO & STITCH was filled with laughs, smiles, and at its core, so many feels on family.
The movie went on to spawn direct-to-video installments, and TV show, so there’s definitely a wealth of material to craft a live action version from.
Currently, outside of the intent to make this, and Chu in talks, nothing else has been established or announced. Whether it’ll be for theatrical or streaming, or both. No word on writers or cast.
So we’ll see how this shapes up.
