Watching this movie I was reminded of a conversation I had with some friends of mine, specifically what directors am I always excited for when they have a movie coming out. And I have to say, Quentin Tarantino is definitely one of them. I mean, with the exception of JACKIE BROWN (it didn’t do much for me), I’ve loved all his movies. Everything from his writing, to how he frames his stories, his movies are always a huge amount of fun to watch.
And THE HATEFUL EIGHT is no exception.
As for the story, if you haven’t seen the movie, you get the gist from the trailers and TV spots…
From there it’s just a sheer joyride of Tarantino staples: great dialogue, fun acting, complete & utter violence, and just a sprinkle of non-linear storytelling for good measure.
It’s definitely a fun ride.
Now early reviews have talked about the level of misogyny in the movie. I won’t lie to you there is a fair amount of violence against the female characters in the movie. But let’s remember people, it’s a movie. I mean this is a movie that takes place in the Old West, in the 1800’s. I’m no Historian, but I’m pretty sure that “equal rights” was not a staple of the time. But to be fair, once you throw in a dash of Tarantino, it does get a little extreme, but in the end, it’s a movie. THE HATEFUL EIGHT by no means promotes or advocates violence against women, just part of the world Tarantino created.
And really, if you’re that squeamish you probably shouldn’t be going to a Tarantino movie anyway, haha.
But I leave you with one bit of advice. This almost a 3 hour movie, so if there’s a theatre that features plush recliners by you, that’s definitely the way to go! I don’t know about you, but once I hit the 3 hour mark? My butt starts to hurt. Haha.
For me, my go-to is my AMC Theatres. Be it one of their renovated auditoriums, or their Cinema Suites, but their recliners definitely made the viewing experience more enjoyable.
But that’s it. Definitely recommend this one. Enjoy!
