WARNING: THERE MAY BE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW… I mean, I’m not sure how to talk about this movie without. Of course, the intent is to try not to but just putting the warning out there!
Okay, I missed this one in theatres but wanted to see it. Arguably didn’t know what to expect when watching it but definitely looked forward to firing it up when it hit Digital.
Safe to say it was weirdly fantastic. Kind of movies I miss when treats like BEING JOHN MALKOVICH and ADAPTATION were in theatres.
But if you’re not familiar, BUGONIA is from director, Yorgos Lanthimos, most recently known for POOR THINGS and KINDS OF KINDNESS, ironically both also starring Emma Stone, but this latest movie focuses on a high-powered CEO, Michelle (Stone), who gets kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists. Michelle’s kidnappers, Teddy (Jesse Plemons) and Don (Aidan Delbus), who believe she’s part of an alien species, Andromedans, and they want her to arrange a meeting with her Emperor to negotiate leaving Earth.
As soon as the grab happens, the audience is treated to an experience filled with dark humor, psychological tension, and a distinctive visual style.
Admittingly, given the set up for this movie, I would joke to myself, “MAN, if Emma Stone isn’t an alien, this is gonna be such a rip off!”. Obviously not going to say how it goes, but I did quite enjoy this movie. As I mentioned, definitely felt like the imaginative movies from the early 2000s. I mean, to be fair, it can be a bit slow at times. But I think that might be more of the pace and spectacle of what makes it into theatres these days.
Either way, if you’re looking for something fun and different, I’d definitely give BUGONIA a go.
BUGONIA is currently available on Digital and Blu-Ray.
