You’ve probably heard by now that we’re getting a new RESIDENT EVIL movie… and honestly, I just don’t know how I feel about it. Don’t get me wrong, the teaser trailer looks AMAZING, but I don’t know if it’s “RESIDENT EVIL”.
But before we get into all of that, check out the trailer below.
From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.
Like I said before, this looks awesome, but don’t know if it’s going to feel like RESIDENT EVIL. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I don’t need Chris, Jill, Leon, Wesker… the list goes on, and as the YouTube synopsis says, this will be a new story, so I don’t expect to see the game characters in the movie.
Which honestly may not be a bad thing. Paul W.S. Anderson wrote and directed the first RESIDENT EVIL movie, he famously talked about how he wanted to avoid stories and characters from the games to give fans of the games something new if they checked out the movie.
And the first movie hit all the right notes for me. Sadly, the rest of the movies in that run sucked harder and harder with each sequel. Where Anderson started with creating his own story within that world, he started mashing in game characters and story concepts, and it just became a little bit of a hot mess to be honest.
But I’ve enjoyed Cregger’s movies more consistently than Anderson’s. So, we’ll see how this goes.
All that said whether or we get shoutouts or Easter Eggs from the games, the trailer’s vibe didn’t have me feeling like I was jumping into the RE world.
Safe to say, while I have my reservations about this movie will play out, I am looking forward to it.
RESIDENT EVIL is set to open in theatres on September 18th.
