Okay, so based on the hero image for this post, I guess you can imagine where I’m going to start this article. That said, EDGE OF TOMORROW, despite it’s weird marketing, like retitling it, then retitling it back… is definitely one of my favorite sci-fi movies, let alone Tom Cruise movies.
But that said, I have to say it’s really been annoying to keep seeing more and more posts stating that while there has been no movement on a sequel, after 12 years, EDGE OF TOMORROW is getting a remake… And that’s so not the case!
If you did didn’t know, EDGE OF TOMORROW was adapted from the Japanese novel, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL. And the remake everyone is talking about is a new anime adaptation of the novel, not the movie, aptly titled, what else, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL.
Set in the year 20XX, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL follows the story of Rita, a resourceful but isolated young woman volunteering to help rebuild Japan after the mysterious appearance of a massive alien flower known as “Darol.” When Darol unexpectedly erupts in a deadly event, unleashing monstrous creatures that decimate the population, Rita is caught in the destruction—and killed. But then she wakes up again. And again. Caught in an endless time loop, Rita must navigate the trauma and repetition of death until she crosses paths with Keiji, a shy young man trapped in the same cycle. Together, they fight to break free from the loop and find meaning in the chaos around them.
I honestly can’t wait for this anime to hit theatres. Big otaku myself, then you got sci-fi concept, and to top it all off, the studio behind this is one of my favorites, Studio 4C° (TEKKONKINKREET, THE ANIMATRIX, SPRIGGAN)
Now, if you’ve seen EDGE OF TOMORROW, you know the premise of the anime. But if you haven’t, and I know I’m being reductive, but think a sci-fi GROUNDHOG DAY of epic proportions! And again, I can’t wait!
But yea, definitely not a remake. Haha.
ALL YOU NEED IS KILL is hitting US theatres on January 16th.
