Randomly thinking about THE MARVELS, and I have to say, online fandom has their hate on for female actors in genre movies. And honestly it is bewildering the level of bigotry and misogyny leveraged against female actors in this context. But that said, since I mentioned THE MARVELS and going to take a step back and say I really enjoyed CAPTAIN MARVEL, and a fan of Brie Larson, both as an actor and in the role. And though I was confused by the setup of THE MARVELS when news and trailers were hitting for the movie, I was definitely excited for a sequel to CAPTAIN MARVEL.
Sadly, THE MARVELS just was not a good time… I mean, at least for me. And that definitely broke my heart. If I had to guess why? Just too much going on in that movie and didn’t give the audience a solid journey to go on.
It really felt like the movie had 3 separate projects/stories crammed together to make the movie. And it just created a fractured experience.
Personally, I think Carol helping the Skrulls find a home and heading to the Kree home world to take out the Supreme Intelligence and we see her earn the name, Annihilator, would’ve made a solid sequel. Not only that, maybe even a mid-credits scene with her coming back to Earth to see Maria and Monica, only to be surprised how big Monica got, and to be greeted with bitterness because Maria passed, and Carol never came to support.
That could’ve led into a third movie in it of itself.
As for Kamala Kahn? Well, we all got the first hint of THE MARVELS in the post credits scene in the season finale of MS. MARVEL, I would’ve loved to see a team-up with Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel in a season 2 of MS. MARVEL. I mean, not only because how adorably Kamala geeked out over Captain Marvel, but just how heartfelt & endearing the show was, the energy from a team-up in a season 2 could’ve been glorious.
And that third movie? Well, after we witness Carol destroying Kree, and being named Annihilator, Dar-Benn decides to invade Earth. Invading Earth rather than some intergalactic plan to steal the elements across the universe.
And in that idea of a third movie, Carol loops in Monica and Kamala, and by the end a resolution with Monica and Carol, and everyone moves to the next stage.
But those are just random thoughts on my end. Just a fan who looked forward to the sequel and left wanting.
Though in the multiverse of sequels, I definitely hope there’s a version without a singing planet.
CAPTAIN MARVEL and THE MARVELS are currently streaming on Disney+.
