What feels like news out of the blue, anime director, Mamoru Hosoda (THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME, SUMMER WARS, MIRAI), has a NEW MOVIE COMING OUT!!! First off, MIND BLOWN! Second, YES PLEASE!
The movie in question? An anime called BELLE. Check out the trailer below.
The trailer doesn’t give you much, but it’s hard to miss some of the director’s visual staples in his animation. But as for what this movie is about, here’s the synopsis:
From the celebrated Academy Award®-nominated director Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu, creators of Mirai, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, and more, comes a fantastical, heartfelt story of growing up in the age of social media.
Suzu is a shy, everyday high school student living in a rural village. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. But when she enters “U”, a massive virtual world, she escapes into her online persona as Belle, a gorgeous and globally-beloved singer. One day, her concert is interrupted by a monstrous creature chased by vigilantes. As their hunt escalates, Suzu embarks on an emotional and epic quest to uncover the identity of this mysterious “beast” and to discover her true self in a world where you can be anyone.
Definitely sounds like Hosoda is giving us themes like his previous movies. Things like coming of age, love, and family. And personally, I here for it. Personally, I am SO EXCITED for a new anime from the director. Without a doubt he’s one of my favorite anime directors of late. Previously it had been the late, Satoshi Kon (PAPRIKA, TOKYO GODFATHERS, PERFECT BLUE).
Much like Kon, Hosoda’s movies have been consistently engaging, powerful, and taking me on an incredible emotional journey. And knowing a new movie is coming, I am beyond excited.
