As I write this, I’m sure you all have heard by now, but the HBO series, LOVECRAFT COUNTRY has been cancelled.
In a statement from HBO:
We will not be moving forward with a second season of ‘Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.
If, on the off chance, you have NO IDEA what I’m talking about… LOVECRAFT COUNTRY follows Atticus Black with his family and friends as they travel across 1950’s “Jim Crow” America in search of Atticus’ father. Along the way, they try and overcome the racism of the era as well as get caught up in a supernatural world & conspiracy of Lovecraftian proportions.
As much as I was a fan of the show, I am not surprised by this decision. The show, masterfully adapted, crafted, written and executive produced by Misha Green, it was all based on a book of the same name, written by Matt Ruff.
With that, the first, now only, season of the show was pretty complete. Nothing really open to build on for future seasons.
And while I personally have complete confidence in Green to continue the story, I can’t blame HBO for being gun shy on a show adaptation when the content runs out. I’m sure I’m not the only one who was disappointed with how GAME OF THRONES ended. I mean, the show was AMAZING when David Benioff and D.B. Weiss inevitably got ahead of the books, and the show arguably took a steep noise dive since.
Ultimately bummed about LOVECRAFT COUNTRY’s cancellation. But definitely plan on reliving the adventure on HBO Max.
