First off, we all love Mike Mignola’s creation that is Hellboy. I mean, that’s not up for debate. Mignola’s art, combined with his love of macabre has been an absolute joy for comic lovers worldwide.
Film and TV? That’s been a little bit of a hit & miss to be sure.
Of course, the Guillermo del Toro movies were a sight to behold. But sadly, we never got to see the end of that trilogy. Instead, we got… well, whatever that 2019 movie was. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely had its moments, I thought David Harbour was awesome in the role. But definitely some uninspired design and effects… the latter being a cringe-worthy in their “polishness”… is that even a word? Eh, I’m going with it.
In addition to all that, even a little “Raimi” horror campiness that just didn’t seem to work in the movie.
But even outside the 2019 movie, those Hellboy cartoons just were off-brand, and awful.
It’s funny, earlier this year Chris Pine talked about how the Star Trek franchise seemed cursed, it feels like Hellboy might be a little more cursed.
As for the new movie? Well looks like it’s going to be adapted from the 3-issue Hellboy mini-series, THE CROOKED MAN, and while Mignola had a story credit on the 2019 movie, looks like he’ll be handling writing duties on the script. And if he’ll be the only writer? That makes me cautiously optimistic for this movie.
Directing this outing will be Brian Taylor (GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGENCE, CRANK movies). As for who will be taking on the title role? That would be Jack Kesy (12 STRONG, DEATH WISH, BAYWATCH).
No word yet on casting for other roles and characters in the movie.
