In, what feels like, a long line of cancellations over streaming, 1899 has been cancelled by Netflix. This news broke back in January, but I have to say, despite the Netflix CEO claiming they don’t cancel successful shows, it was definitely a bummer to hear it got the axe.
1899’s co-creator, Baran bo Odar, took to Instagram to break the news.
While friends, family and critics LOVED and can’t stop raving about DARK, I could never get into it. But definitely bought in for 1899 and binged the season when it dropped. And so glad I did.
If you’re not familiar with 1899, it’s from the creators of DARK and I fondly think of it as a German, Victorian-era LOST (at least seasons 1-3) set at sea. But like the reference with LOST, definitely nothing is as it seems, which you can easily infer from the show’s poster.
As for why it got cancelled? No reason has been given. The show itself looked to be an expensive production, so one could only assume the viewership wasn’t there to balance that out.
But whatever the reason. WARNING, POTENTIAL SPOILER… Sucks we won’t get to see where this story would go, especially after that cliffhanger at the end of the season. But at least, even with a cliffhanger, felt like an ending too.
If you haven’t seen 1899 yet, it’s currently streaming on Netflix.
