Sounds like The CW is gearing up for the Fall season by getting pilots into production. The most recent announcement? Greenlighting a pilot order for the SUPERNATURAL prequel currently known as, THE WINCHESTERS.
The show, created & co-produced by Dean himself, Jensen Ackles, will focus on Sam & Dean’s parents when they first meet. Supposedly it’ll take place in the 70’s, Daddy Winchester just gets back from Vietnam, and things go from there.
In addition to Ackles behind the camera responsibilities, he’ll also be narrating the show as well, in what sounds like something along the lines of YOUNG SHELDON.
You know, in all honesty, I don’t know how much I’m into this show concept. I don’t know what the CW’s viewership has been like lately, but more and more I seem to be growing away from the identity the network has becoming. And I don’t mean that from any political/social perspective, but simply their programming hasn’t been really any good of late.
Whether a series ends, or cancelled, some of my favorites shows on the network have ended. The only thing that had me coming back had been the Arrowverse. But since Oliver Queen died, one by one I’ve lost interest in the shows. The only hold out had been LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, but that one recently fell into the bucket of me not rushing to tune in to the latest episode.
But where am I going with that little soap box? The CW’s shows just haven’t been that great. So when it came time to ramp up new programming, it’s not surprising that they’re dipping into one of their success wells. I mean, SUPERNATURAL has a crazy fanbase, and the show ran for 15 seasons. Really can’t blame them for trying to dip back in.
Just not sure if a prequel is the way to go. If anything, if feels like there just won’t be anything new. And without Sam, Dean, and co., why would I care?
The initial pilot order news is coming from SYFY WIRE, and they noted that there has been a number of attempts to create a SUPERNATURAL. One of which I hoped would happen was, WAYWARD SISTERS. If you remember, during the course of SUPERNATURAL, Sheriff Jody taking in a couple girls affected by demons, one of which started taking up hunting herself. There was a back-door pilot during the show, but a pilot order never materialized.
Honestly would love to see WAYWARD SISTERS come to life than THE WINCHESTERS. But that’s just me.
