Remake/reboot turnarounds seem to be shorter and shorter these days. Most recently Warner Bros. Discovery announced that they’ll be adapting the HARRY POTTER movies as a TV series. I can go into that a little deeper, but now rumors that are circling that Netflix is looking to remake SQUID GAME as an English language version and is wanting David Fincher to helm it.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love David Fincher, BUT WHY A REMAKE? I mean, Netflix, you already greenlit a second season of the original from creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk. WHY A REMAKE?
I realize this is currently only a rumor, but if there’s any merit to this, the show came out in 2021! It’s 2023, and you’re already thinking remake?
Not only that, but the creator shopped this concept around for 10 years, without success, before Netflix. And while some may say he’s owes the company for the success, that goes both ways.
And while Western, not to mention, a Global audience, has been caught up in the series, it was arguably written for a Korean community. And to remake it for a Western audience, something is undoubtedly going to get lost.
A great example of this would be the Japanese film, SHALL WE DANCE?, where it opened with a brief scroll about public expressions in Japanese life. And what unfolded was a wonderful movie. But the Western remake that eventually came with Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere… not only was it a horrible movie, it lacked that connective element that the original filmmakers weaved into their story.
At the moment, sounds like nothing more than a rumor. But even still, rumor or not, I hope this doesn’t happen.
