That’s right friends, it’s been a hot minute since the movie’s announcement, but we finally got a trailer. Check it out below!
Based on one of the best-selling, most critically acclaimed video game series of all time, Uncharted introduces audiences to the young street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and showcases his first treasure hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg). In an action-adventure epic that spans the globe, the two go in dangerous pursuit of “the greatest treasure never found” while also tracking clues that may lead to Nathan’s long-lost brother.
Not gonna lie, the movie looks fun as hell. But I can’t help but wonder if this entry will overcome the “video game curse”. If you don’t know, it’s essentially the belief that every movie based on a video game sucks so much ass. And even though this movie looks fun as hell and has a great cast… I can’t help but feel like the movie was miscast. Specifically with the lead character of Nathan Drake (Tom Holland). As fans of the game know, Nathan Drake is a full blown adult with a swagger in his voice. No disrespect to Tom Holland, to whom I think is a great actor, is still a boy. With that, just doesn’t embody Nathan Drake for me.
And if the movie is as fun as the trailer looks, it would be ashame if casting expectations break the movie. I can only assume that they cast so young so that they can build a franchise, and have a bit of longevity in that regard with the age of the cast in this initial outing.
And that’ll definitely be the trick, won’t it? I mean, at face value, if you’re not familiar with the games, this seems like a no-brainer, fun as hell movie outing. But if you’re familiar with the games, or even remotely aware of them, to enjoy this movie it feels like moviegoers might need to push them out of their heads & take the movie as its own concept to enjoy.
Definitely easier said than done to be sure. But we’ll see. I know in the meantime, being familiar with the games or not, definitely looking forward to this one. How about you? Drop your thoughts on the Fuzzybug Facebook Page today!
UNCHARTED comes out on February 18, 2022.
