RLJE Films has acquired the North American rights to the movie THE OPENING ACT, a movie written & directed by comedian, Steve Byrne.
The movie itself stars Jimmy O. Yang (SILICON VALLEY) as an aspiring stand-up comedian. The Wrap is also reporting that, alongside Yang, a number of fan-favorite comedians are set to star as well, from Alex Moffat, Cedric The Entertainer, Neal Brennan, Debby Ryan, Ken Jeong, Bill Burr, Jermaine Fowler and Russell Peters, among others.

In it, Yang plays a man stuck in a thankless job while trying to pursue his true passion in stand-up comedy. But when he gets the opportunity to emcee opening for his hero, the realities of life on the stage come crashing in. Between relentless hecklers, drunk comedy groupies and hard-to-impress morning radio DJs, things get off to a rough start. Even if he can learn from his idols and overcome the challenges, he’ll have to prove he has what it takes to make his dream a reality.

Obviously not much to go on, but what information that’s available, I am really looking forward to this movie. Not only being a big fan of Steve Byrne and Jimmy O. Yang, but the journey of chasing your passion, and pushing to overcome the unexpected challenges is something that resonates with me as it’s a path I’ve been on myself since 2015.
And knowing Byrne, it’ll be something that’s both hilarious and heartfelt. And I definitely can’t wait.
THE OPENING ACT was produced by Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley under their Wild West Picture Show banner and by Sefton Fincham and was executive produced by Dwight Manley, Michael Shader, Dean Buchanan, Vahid Shababi. Better yet, as we’re all struggling to deal with life in this pandemic, when this opens on October 16th, not only will it be in theatres, but sounds like PVOD as well!
