I am both elated and heartbroken. Netflix’s LOST IN SPACE has been renewed for a third season, but sadly it’ll be it’s last.
Without a doubt LOST IN SPACE has been one of my favorite shows that Netflix has brought us, and it definitely sucks that it’ll be coming to an end. But sounds like it was more of a creative decision, than a network one, much in the same vein that brought NBC’s THE GOOD PLACE to a close.
LOST IN SPACE’s showrunner, Zack Estrin had this to say:
“From the beginning, we’ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy,”
“A three part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end. It’s also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode — if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission — it’s Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith… and The Robot. And, of course, Debbie the Chicken. So while this chapter of ‘Lost In Space’ is coming to a rousing conclusion, I’m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.”
So there you have it, sounds like Estrin and his team had always planned this as a trilogy. So there is some comfort in knowing that we will get an ending to this adventure, and not left hanging with an unexpected cancel.
But if you’re wondering what Estrin meant by, “…continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix…”, well looks like Netflix has announced a multi-year overall deal for Estrin to produce new series for the network. And with the effort that’s been put into LOST IN SPACE, I personally can’t wait!
