It’s true Witcher fans, Henry Cavill is leaving the THE WITCHER after the upcoming season 3 on Netflix. And as I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Liam Hemsworth is set to take over the role of Geralt of Rivia.
Honestly, this is without a doubt heartbreaking. I mean WITCHER fandom has often said that Cavill IS Geralt, much in same way fans have said Viggo Mortensen IS Aragorn.
From their performance, their presence, they embody those characters. And dare I say define those characters. To picture someone else in the role seems unfathomable.
As for why Cavill is leaving the show? That’s question. No explanation has been given other than it was time to move on. But Cavill in the past has spoken about an estimated 7 season plan for the show, and that he would be there for all of it. Presumably because he loves playing the character.
My personal guess is that the reason is the dreaded “creative differences” driving the reason for leaving. I don’t think it’s any secret that Cavill is a fan of the books, and I want to say that there was some conflict with the showrunners about diversions from the source material. Just speculation on my part, but maybe it was too much?
As for Cavill’s successor? Well, no offense to Liam Hemsworth, I’ve enjoyed his roles, I don’t see him filling Cavill’s shoes. He definitely has a challenge ahead of him. Acting chops aside, Hemsworth just doesn’t have the physical presence Cavill does. It’s more like he would be better suited for Geralt’s little brother or something? I mean, sure, season 4 would be years off, and gives him a chance to bulk up… but the buy in is hard.
I’m sure it probably sounds like I’m tossing shade on Hemsworth, which is definitely not my intent. Just think the role has been miscast for Cavill’s departure. Personally I think someone like Mads Mikkelsen is fill the role. But I know things like this are a touch more complicated that mere wishlist thinking.
Either way, looking forward to the upcoming season 3, and the prequel series, BLOOD ORIGIN, starring Michelle Yeoh. But beyond that for the franchise on the streaming giant? Well, we’ll see.
