I’m sure you’ve heard by now, but what seems to be in addition to mass cancellations at Warner Brothers Discovery and all its business units, but the HBO show, MINX has been cancelled at the network & by extension, HBO Max.
If you’re not familiar with the show, MINX is set in 1970s Los Angeles, and focuses on an earnest young feminist, Joyce (Olivia Lovibond), as she seeks to change the landscape for women. But after defeat and defeat, she joins forces with a low-rent publisher, Doug (Jake Johnson), to create the first erotic magazine for women.
And the show was an absolute delight! The interaction with Joyce and Doug, as well as the rest of the cast, was so fantastic and hilarious! It was just SO GOOD! But what’s even more heartbreaking about this cancellation is that it was actually renewed for a second season. But had a reversal. Not unlike what happened with ABC’s STUMPTOWN.
But more likely this is a result of the pledge to find $3B in savings by year’s end by WBD CEO, David Zaslav. A pledge that has included cancelling the BATGIRL movie, cancelling WESTWORLD and THE NEVERS, as well as removing those shows, as well as MINX, from HBO Max. One can only assume so WBD doesn’t have to pay residuals. But that’s just speculation on my part.
As for where all of this leaves MINX?
Well, if you’re a fan of the show, a lot like BATGIRL, the second season it was greenlit for is just about done filming. And Jake Johnson took to Instagram to pledge they are going to finish the season. Where it goes from there? Well one can only hope the showrunners can find the show a new home.
But what do you think about MINX’s cancellation? Drop your thoughts on Fuzzybug’s Facebook Page today! Normally to end a write-up on a show, I’d say something like, “…episodes now streaming on…”, but I guess I can’t do that this time. Thanks Zaslav.
