Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming RESIDENT EVIL series in all its post-apocalyptic glory. Check it out below.
Nothing eventful ever happens in the peaceful New Raccoon City. The legendary franchise Resident Evil brings its battle for survival to Netflix on July 14th.
I have to admit, as badass as this trailer looks, I am cautiously optimistic about it’s release. Fans of the video games, to which all the film came from, know we’ve had a rocky road when it comes to seeing out beloved video game franchise on the screen.
First, we had the series of movies from Paul W.S. Anderson, starring Mila Jovovich. But admittingly, the more that series went on, though characters from the games made appearances, it became more a vehicle for Jovovich’s Alice character and less about the Resident Evil world as a whole.
Before the first movie was released, Anderson commented that he chose not to follow the games because he didn’t want the audience to know the story going in. Which I could appreciate. But looking back, definitely could’ve made it more Resident Evil than Alice, especially today, I think fans of the source expect a more faithful adaptation now more than ever, especially in our MCU world.
But I will say, the number of animated installments of the franchise were definitely a joy to watch. Still leaves the live-action versions victim to the curse that all live-action video game adaptations suck. I know we recently had a recently live-action entry in theatres. Word would have it, despite claims to be more faithful to the games, it came to a mixed reception.
Though it’s on the list, haven’t seen the latest one myself. Between marketing not selling me, wasn’t sure if I was happy with the casting, so definitely wasn’t in a rush.
BUT getting a little off topic, the trailer for the Netflix series looks fantastic! Like I said, cautiously optimistic, but definitely excited to see where this goes. Though not much is known about this, I remember there was a comment that the games would be canon to this series, so definitely curious how that will play out. Also, a little confusing too. Because it opens to see Albert Wesker, played by Lance Reddick, move his family to New Racoon City. So one could infer that this is taking place after the first game, because if memory serves, the town got nuked. And unlike the games, where Wesker was the villain & military mind, looks like he’s a scientist here. So it’ll be curious to see what liberties will be played here if the games are canon.
Though it doesn’t end there. Though we’re not sure about the plot of the show, looks like it’ll take place in two timelines. One in 2022, and another in 2036, where we see Jade, one of Wesker’s daughters, fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic London.
All I know is that however this plays out, definitely interested in seeing the show. But how about you? What did you think of the trailer and prospects of the show? Drop your thoughts on our Twitter page today!
