That’s right friends, THE BLACKLIST star, Megan Boone is leaving the show after season 8. Boone has played Agent Keene since the first episode, but Variety is reporting she’ll be leaving the show series after this season comes to an end.
According to Variety, NBC has declined to comment on her departure.
Personally, this news has me worried about the future of the show. With it, I can’t help but think about CASTLE as that show was coming to an end. If you don’t know, or remember, before ABC dropped the hammer on the Nathan Fillion led show & there was hope for a renewal, the powers that be decided not to renew co-star Stana Katic’s contract.
There was a lot of speculation as to why, fights on set and things of the like. But for the show’s narrative, it was troubling. Katic played Kate Beckett, a character who played the foil to Nathan Fillion’s Richard Castle since the start of the show. Basically, the core of the show. Essentially that “Mulder & Scully” dynamic, it doesn’t work without one or the other.
Ultimately CASTLE was cancelled, and the showrunners addressed the assumed cliffhanger with a half-assed, tacked on epilogue to give fans closure to the show.
But with THE BLACKLIST, as fans of the show know, it’s been renewed for a season 9. That said, this dynamic mentioned is true for this show too. Reddington came into Keene’s (Boone) life at the FBI for mysterious, unknown reasons. And with that mystery, that relationship became the core of the show, generating questions, season after season, as to what it’s all about.
With Boone leaving the show, her character being Reddington’s foil, it begs the question how the show may move forward with its core no longer intact.
Though I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming 9th season. Even though Boone’s character has been a constant element this season, the character herself has barely been in the season. It’s almost as if this season has been an experiment to see if the show could work without Boone.
With the, as of this writing, penultimate episode having aired last night, there’s hope for some closure and proper send off for Boone’s character, Agent Elizabeth Keene.
THE BLACKLIST season finale airs on NBC on June 23rd.
