With Disney head-huncho, Bob Chapek, calling SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS an, “…interesting experiment…”<\/em>, well, looks like the results are in. But before I get into that, I know Chapek’s comments were later clarified as being misunderstood, and if anything, just an unfortunate choice of words when referencing the first MCU featuring a POC lead… but whatever, I’m still calling bullshit. I mean, I don’t think he meant anything malicious, but I think you can objectivilly make the argument that the marketing creative was kind of dialed in. Don’t believe me? I challenge you, look at the theatrical poster for SHANG-CHI, the one with the all the characters, from a composition perspective, sloppy. You don’t know what to look at, and there are random ass elements thrown in, and that’s not to say, in a age of “pixel-jockeying” in our movie posters (I miss the days of Drew), seems like not a lot of effort was put in there as well. Need comparison? Look at the posters for BLACK WIDOW, ETERNALS, even all the creative for the MCU Disney+ shows, it really feels like more craft and attention was paid to the rest of the MCU than SHANG-CHI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So misunderstood comments on not, being a person of Asian decent, Chapek calling SHANG-CHI an experiment was, well, bullshit to me. I mean, unless the experiment was, “Let’s see how little money we can spend on the first Asian superhero and see what our profit margins will be…”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which honestly makes so happy and proud SHANG-CHI is CRUSHING IT at the box office. Which I’m sure Chapek could care less about the outcry, cause this is just a “success notch” for him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I digress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what does all of this have to do with ETERNALS? Well there have been reports that depending on SHANG-CHI’s performance, the movie may be delayed beyond it’s November release, as well as whether or not it would feature a hybrid release like BLACK WIDOW. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, like I said, the results are in from the experiment, and with SHANG-CHI crushing it, ETERNALS will feature a 45 day theatrical window, then head to Disney+ at no additional cost. That’s right D+ subscribers, no Premier Access to hit your wallet with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that, also sounds like the rest of the 2021 releases in the Mouse House will follow the “45 day window” model, which is awesome for theatres. But I can’t help but wonder if ScarJo’s legal team will be all, “Wanna cut that check now Mouse?”, and honestly, rightfully so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
