Man, I haven\u2019t really been a Nic Cage fan since the \u201890s. But when the trailer for MANDY was released\u2026 Well, one, NO IDEA what I just watched and two, I thought something I didn\u2019t think I would think since the \u201890s, Nic Cage you have my attention.<\/p>\n
But if you haven\u2019t heard of MANDY, check out the trailer here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n So yea, going into the theatre, I had NO idea what to expect from MANDY\u2026 and after, yea, still not entirely sure what I watched. Haha. But after seeing it I have to say, I did dig it.<\/p>\n But if I had to describe MANDY in a short blurb, I\u2019d probably say that is Stanley Kubrick and Heavy Metal made a live-action baby? You\u2019d have MANDY.<\/p>\n And it\u2019s interesting, I saw MANDY at my local Alamo Drafthouse<\/strong><\/a> for an Advanced Screening, and their host opened with asking the crowd if they saw the director\u2019s, Panos Cosmatos, previous movie, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW. And to hear the host talk, to add to my ambiguity of not knowing what to expect, I was getting the feeling that I was in for a movie that would play well with \u201cfringe\u201d movie fans. And that\u2019s by no means a bad thing, but definitely helped me get ready for what I was about to see.<\/p>\n At MANDY\u2019s heart, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a spoiler to say, is a revenge movie.<\/p>\n We\u2019re given a glimpse into the life of Red Miller (Nic Cage), and Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough). But after a horrific murder of Mandy before Red\u2019s eyes, he goes on a rampage of revenge of those responsible.<\/p>\n Pretty straight forward, but where the \u201cfringe movie\u201d comes into play is that this movie was chalked full of metaphor that, I\u2019ll be honest, I didn\u2019t quite get. But really, who doesn\u2019t love a solid revenge movie?<\/p>\n Where Stanley Kubrick comes into play, much like a Kubrick movie, when we\u2019re introduced to the couple, it\u2019s definitely a slow burn before the shit hits the fan. But not a bad slow burn where you might anticipate getting bored, it\u2019s definitely keeps you in the movie as you\u2019re brought into the life of Red and Mandy. Think THE SHINING, you have a slow burn as you\u2019re introduced to the life of Jack Torrance and his family before shit got bat shit.<\/p>\n As for Heavy Metal, there\u2019s sexuality, religion plays, and monsters. Yes, MONSTERS. Haha. Shit is bizarre, and I LOVED IT!<\/p>\n More than anything, what I loved most about this movie was the look of it. It definitely had a retro feel to it, like a movie from the \u201880s. Like if I was to pop in a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET on VHS into the player (yes, I still have a VHS player), that\u2019s definitely the look of it. A beautiful distressed feel. But more than that, the movie\u2019s use of color was fantastic!<\/p>\n But I can\u2019t talk about things I loved about this movie without mentioning when Nic Cage\u2019s character goes MANIAC! Because let\u2019s be honest, no one does manic better than Nic Cage. Alamo even did a pre-show to prep you for it. If you ever been to an Alamo Drafthouse, you know they do great pre-shows before a movie. Whether it to inform the audience, like they did with BLACK PANTHER, or just something for fun, in this case it was a little of both. Moviegoers were treated to a bevy of bat-shit crazy clips from Nic Cage\u2019s worst roles\u2026 and I have to say it definitely worked in prepping you for what you about to see!<\/p>\n But that was the downside too. Not the Alamo\u2019s pre-show, but Cage going manic. As he does it so well, he can, at times, take it to a point where it\u2019s almost comical. And that was definitely the case a few points during MANDY. And for me, took me out of it a little bit.<\/p>\n Even still, at the end of the day, MANDY was a glorious sleigh ride into hell!
