So the sequel to the sci-fi GROUNDHOG DAY that is, EDGE OF TOMORROW, has long been talked about and looks like it’s finally gonna happen. BUT here’s the kicker, director Doug Liman has been on record as saying it won’t only be a sequel, but ALSO a prequel!<\/p>\n

According to Liman:<\/p>\n
That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing \u2014 much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film \u2014 and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The director went on to say:<\/p>\n
I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I am a little cautious about this, the quotes sounds like they want to revolutionize the idea of a “sequel”, and less about approaching the sequel that makes sense for the first film…<\/p>\n
Now despite it’s performance at the box-office, which I attributed to confusing marketing. I mean, it got to the point where you couldn’t tell if the movie was called EDGE OF TOMORROW, or LIVE\/DIE\/REPEAT (a marketing tagline from it’s theatrical release). BUT despite it’s performance, I LOVED this film. But as much as I would love for more in this universe, the first film played like one of those for a great one-off, but really didn’t lend itself to a sequel…<\/p>\n
But knowing it’ll be a prequel as well? Who knows what might happen? I mean, the first film involved time-travel. So going off the prequel aspect, could we be seeing the Mimics initial invasion? Maybe witness Sergeant Rita Vrataski’s\u00a0claim to the title “Angel of Verdun”? It’s really anyone’s guess.<\/p>\n
But I love me some sci-fi wherever I can get it.<\/p>\n
