You’ve undoubtedly heard by now, but Warner Bros. has announced that a 5th entry into THE MATRIX is in development. I’m not sure what else to say about that, other than it seems completely unnecessary. I didn’t know what to expect from the last movie, THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS. I was cautiously optimistic, because I loved the original trilogy, but on that same note, I didn’t understand why it was happening.
Ultimately, felt like it didn’t need to happen. Though my memory of the movie, it was clear that the 4th movie was going to happen with or without the Warchowski Siblings. I mean, they pretty blatantly worked that note into the movie. Which one could only assume is why Lana Warchowski returned to direct, though her sister declined to return as she felt she said what she needed to with the original movies.
But in geeking out moment, I remember thinking Lana should have just let it go & let someone else have a take with the franchise. Which, ironically, is sort of what’s happening with this 5th entry.
For this next outing, Drew Goddard (THE MARTIAN, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, DAREDEVIL) will be writing and directing with Lana Warchowski serving as executive producer.
No details have been released for this next chapter. Nor is it known if Keanu Reeves or Carrie Ann-Moss will return to their roles. Not to mention the new cast that was introduced in RESURRECTIONS.
For myself, I love me some sci-fi and would love to see what Goddard could do in this universe, but if the last movie is any indication, THE MATRIX’s time has passed. I’ll gladly concede if I’m wrong. But, as one would assume, Warner Bros. is clearly excited for this.
From the Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production, Jesse Ehrman:
Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters…
Ehrman continued…
The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.
