You heard that right friends, for better or worse, on February 23rd, Warner Bros. announced that it would be producing more LORD OF THE RINGS movies on an investors call.
And I did say for better or worse. Currently we don’t know what these movies will be about. Whether they’ll be based on writings of Tolkien, or imagining an expansion of that world by filmmakers, is currently not known.
To be fair, a little early to make those announcements. Sounds like Warner Bros. is merely declaring the intention.
But one can’t help but wonder what shape these movies will take.
Regardless of, whether or not, you’ve read the books, from the original trilogy to THE HOBBIT, or THE SILMARILLION, with the majority of those listings already having been adapted to film, there’s not a lot of material left in the estate.
Of course, we got THE RINGS OF POWER, which reportedly was an adaptation of a part of THE SILMARILLION, and the upcoming anime movie, WAR OF ROHIRRIM, focusing on the King of Rohan that Helm’s Deep is named for.
And while Tolkien created an ever-expansive world, can’t help but wonder what these new movies will be centered around, or if they’re even necessary… or there’s a demand? Just seems like with the MCU, everyone seems to want to create a cinematic universe with IP they have rights to. Just not sure if that’s a positive thing.
If you’re wondering if Peter Jackson will be involved in this, he’s been quoted as saying that’s he’s been kept, “…in the loop.”. Though, the original films were amazing, even more so with the Expanded Editions, Jackson lost a little street cred with me after THE HOBBIT and MORTAL ENGINES adaptations.
All I know if Warner Bros. better not be remaking Jackson’s original trilogy! Middle Earth will riot! Haha.
