As promised, DC Studios co-chair, James Gunn, delivered announcements on the upcoming DCU (something I’ll build on in another write-up). While the announcements for the first part of Chapter 1 (think “phases” from the MCU) were both exciting and odd, one announcement that’s been making the rounds has me stoked.
THE SEQUEL TO ‘THE BATMAN’, named, ‘THE BATMAN PART II’.
But it doesn’t stop there. From the sound of things, looks like Matt Reeves is planning a trilogy for his Batman universe. Will it happen? One can only hope because THE BATMAN was badass!
As for when we’ll see PART II? Never fear, it’s been announced that it’ll hit theatres on October 3, 2025.
Though with all the announcements coming out today for the DCU, if you’re wondering where this Batman will fall in the universe James Gunn and Peter Safran are building, well, it won’t. THE BATMAN, and the upcoming JOKER follow-up, will fall under the brand, DC Elseworld.
Fans of DC Comics undoubtedly know the imprint well. Comic wise, the Elseworld imprint serves as a place to allow comic creators, who have interesting takes on DC characters to bring to life on the page. And looks like there will be a cinematic counterpart for filmmakers as well.
The latter? Wondering how I feel about it. While I enjoy Marvel movies, definitely feel like the success of the MCU spawned the idea that everything after needs to be a shared universe. And feels like audiences are arguing franchises that came before are suddenly universes, when they clearly weren’t. So, in that context, having room to play, and not being bogged down by argument if something is “canon” or not, well, that’s just appealing.
But at the same time, with something like comic book characters, also like the linear metric… but now I’m just babbling.
In anycase, are you excited for the sequel to THE BATMAN? Drop your thoughts on the Fuzzybug Facebook Page today!
THE BATMAN is currently streaming on HBO Max.
