It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had any news about if & when STAR WARS will return to the big screen. The last outing having been, THE RISE OF SKYWALKER in 2019. Sure, there is Patty Jenkin’s announced ROGUE SQUADRON movie, but that one has been riddled with rumors of being delayed indefinitely or abandoned altogether. And there really anything else on the plate. Sure, the franchise has been building an expanded universe on Disney+, much to the glee of Star Wars fans (myself included), but one can’t help but wonder if we’ll ever see the galaxy far, far away on the big screen again.
Well looks like MovieWeb is putting some wood on the fire of rumors. Supposedly talks have begun about creating a new Star Wars trilogy for the big screen.
The report talks about how this new trilogy will be set after the events in THE RISE OF SKYWALKER and potentially start a new Jedi Order. As for whether the sequel trilogy cast will return, and theoretically have a focus on Rey rebuilding the Skywalker name? Well, I don’t know if I would get my hopes up if that’s something you’d like to see.
Despite the, essentially, virtual Luke we’ve been treated to in THE MANDALORIAN and THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT, we all know that THE RISE OF SKYWALKER was famously touted as the end of the Skywalker saga. MovieWeb has also been reporting that Disney doesn’t want to go down the route of more Skywalker movies. But the question here is, if a new, Jedi focused trilogy will be happening, how will it be packaged?
Having grown up with the original, pre-Special Edition STAR WARS trilogy, the universe for me has always been about the Skywalker line. Even then, with spin-offs like the EWOK TV specials, droid cartoons, and that holiday special everyone loves, it always came back to the Skywalkers. Something that Kathleen Kennedy even echoed when Episode VII was announced, saying that there will be spin-off movies, but the through-line, or “Episode”, movies will always be about the Skywalkers.
So it goes back to how this trilogy be packaged. If Lucasfilm continues the “Episode” concept, despite Episode IX being the end of the Skywalker saga, definitely think they should continue it for at least one more trilogy. I mean, if you continue the “Episode” motif, that’s not to say the franchise can’t move beyond the Skywalkers for their legacy movies, but there definitely needs to be a passing of the torch if you will. Not unlike that other space franchise, STAR TREK, were with GENERATIONS was essentially a passing of the torch between the TOS and TNG casts when it came to movies.
But who knows what will happen. Though one thing I’m pretty sure we can all count on is that STAR WARS will be back on the big screen. It’s by far a too popular franchise to resign to Disney+, but we’ll see.
