It’s no secret that the pandemic has wreaked havoc on movies, both in productions and actual theatres themselves. But with the former, it’s definitely been delay after delay for releases we’ve been looking forward to. And the sequel to MARVEL’s DOCTOR STRANGE has been no exception as it’s been delayed from its original March 2022 date to May 6, 2022.
That move was a little frustrating for me personally, as I have a tradition of seeing a movie on the birthday weekend, of which IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS was to open. And that’s only compounded by the fact that, the first STRANGE movie has immense replay value for me, more so than any other MCU movie, so definitely bummed the sequel got pushed back.
BUT I’m getting off-track, haha. We recently got a trailer for the upcoming sequel! And it looks awesome. Check it out below.
Definitely a few confusing things for me here, as I haven’t seen NO WAY HOME yet (I know, I know), but it looks like IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS takes place directly after the events of the latest Spider-man movie and, of course, after the events in WANDAVISION. Not only that, those caught up on their MCU goodness, will definitely spot things coming in from WHAT IF, with seeing the “dark” Strange, as well as the tentacle creature, Shuma-Gorath, spotted throughout the season. In addition to all of that, we see Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo return with some rocking locs, as well as seeing the first live-action incarnation of Marvel Comic’s America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez.
But to top it all off, RACHEL MCADAMS IS IN THE TRAILER?!! Why is that significant? Well, it’s been reported that she wasn’t returning for the sequel. I don’t know if that was misinformation, if she changed her mind… but loved seeing her in the trailer. She’s a great character and foil for the Doctor and would be a shame if she wasn’t part of this outing.
With all the nuggets we’re given in this trailer, has me looking forward to this more and more. That’s not to say I wasn’t, but a little worried when the original director, Scott Derrickson left the project due to “creative differences” with Marvel Studios, and fan-favorite Sam Raimi was brought in to finish the project.
Me being worried is by no means a knock again Sam Raimi, but more fear of the potential pitfalls of frankensteining visions in film. Never forget the theatrical release of JUSTICE LEAGUE.
But in the end, I am definitely psyched for this movie to hit, even if it won’t be on the birthday weekend. Haha.
