December is FILLED with a ton of geek releases. From THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT, to season 2 of THE WITCHER, and with that we’re getting THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS is just a few weeks. Are you ready? Well, to whet your appetite, Warner Bros. dropped the final trailer for the movie. With it, a decent amount of insight of what we might expect! Check it out below!
From visionary filmmaker Lana Wachowski comes “The Matrix Resurrections,” the long-awaited next chapter in the groundbreaking franchise that redefined a genre. The new film reunites original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in the iconic roles they made famous, Neo and Trinity.
In “The Matrix Resurrections,” return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. And if Thomas…Neo…has learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of—or into— the Matrix. Of course, Neo already knows what he has to do. But what he doesn’t yet know is the Matrix is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before. Déjà vu.
I’ve written before about my apprehension returning to THE MATRIX, especially with the original trilogy ending in a pretty complete fashion. But this final trailer definitely presents a movie that looks exciting and beautiful as hell. And that’s not to mention that last line, just TOO GOOD! Haha. But from a continuity standpoint, I just don’t know how this is going to fit together.
Trinity died in the real-world by the end of the trilogy, and it was inferred Neo gave his life too for the colony with his body being carried off by the robots. Further inferred that in the MMORPG that followed, one of the plot points was that the robots return Neo’s body, not Neo himself. So how are they back? That and Lana Warchowski giving us a different Agent Smith and a younger Morpheus.
The former, Hugo Weaving was set to return, but ultimately cut due to scheduling conflicts. And the latter, all Lawrence Fishbourne has said was that an invite to return wasn’t extended.
With the dead returning to life, definitely fits the “resurrection” title. But it feels like this may not be a sequel, but maybe more of a reboot of sorts to recharge the franchise, but not lose its roots. I mean, let’s be honest, not only the original series of movies, but the multimedia plan the Warchowski’s had as a whole, it was definitely ahead of its time. And with the advancements in technology, not only in filmmaking, but our world as a whole, even if RESURRECTIONS is missing one Warchowski, Lana may be able to realize the IP as imagined. There could definitely be a future there.
And that realization could very well be the plan. I mentioned the MMORPG that followed the original movies, but sounds like a game is coming for RESURRECTIONS too. CBR.com is reporting that a tie-in could be on it’s way. It’ll run on the Unreal Engine 5, which they estimate will likely mean it’ll be a Playstation 5 exclusive. Now if Sony will only pump out more consoles… but that’s a whole other story, haha.
But however this movie breaks down when we see it, despite my apprehension, I’m definitely here for it. Like the last TV spot before this, definitely feel the same excitement I did with the original movie’s trailer. With it, just the tease of a big sci-fi battle, hopefully one that will be more poetic than the more generic one we received at the end of the original series, and just how things may flip in roles of the focal point from Neo to Trinity… and just so much more I could into… I mean, what was that “Force Push” power Neo was rocking? I am definitely curious and excited for this movie to premiere.
But really, I’ve rambled enough. What about you? How are you feeling about THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS? Drop your thoughts on the Fuzzybug Twitter Page today!
