Honestly, after the “years long” fandom campaign, one in no small part encouraged by the director himself, to bring the “Snyder Cut” to life… I’m kind of burnt out on Zack Snyder, even more so when he tried to make an effort to bring a “Snyder Cut” of SUCKER PUNCH to life… now don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed movies of his, hurts me to admit I enjoyed his ego trip of a cut that is, ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, and more recently ARMY OF THE DEAD.
But doesn’t change the fact as press photos come out more and more of him, there’s this shit eating grin I want to punch, only fueled by the knowledge of him trying to work up his fanbase in his campaigns. Which, honestly, I can’t help but think of a fandom version of Former President Trump… which only makes the exhaustion even deeper.
BUT enough of that soap box! Why mention the director? Well, a trailer has recently dropped for ARMY OF THIEVES, the prequel to the aforementioned, ARMY OF THE DEAD. As many of you may know, Zack Snyder has planned as a trilogy, with eyes on building out a franchise from the initial movie. But check out the trailer below!
In this prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.
Not gonna lie, this movie looks fun as hell! As mentioned, this is a prequel, in the sense this happens before Vegas, but focuses on one member of that group, the safecracker, Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer). From the looks of things looks to be fun, international, heist thriller, with a zombie pandemic playing just a small part in the background.
And I definitely like that bit. I mean, I mentioned this is a prequel of sorts, so one would imagine, going off ARMY OF THE DEAD, this would dive into the assumed Area 51, where the initial convoy carrying the infected was coming from.
But going in this direction, I like how, if taking the trailer at face value, the outbreak is just something in the background. Not unlike BIRDS OF PREY. I mean, you have a focus on Harley Quinn, one would imagine would get a Jared Leto Joker in there, and I’m so glad he wasn’t. Just a small background element. And that movie was so much stronger for it and I hope that’s the case here.
And going off my soap box earlier, looks like Snyder isn’t directing this either, Schweighöfer will be the one behind the camera. Zack Snyder and his wife, Deborah, will be mainly producing THIEVES, with Zack originating the story, and Shay Hatten crafting the screenplay.
No word yet on when this will hit Netflix but sounds like it’ll be sometime in 2021. I know that doesn’t help much, but that’s all I can find at the moment.
