No, not talking a remake of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, Variety is reporting that Isaac is attached to play Solid Snake, the hero in the METAL GEAR video game franchise. In this case, a movie based on METAL GEAR SOLID, currently in development at Sony Pictures.
The movie is set to be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (KONG: SKULL ISLAND), with a script written by Derek Connolly (SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED).
The METAL GEAR franchise was created by Hideo Kojima and published by Konami. My first experience with the franchise was WAY back in the day on the original Nintendo Entertainment System. But, if memory serves, “Solid Snake” was just a really generic character on the packaging. It wasn’t until METAL GEAR SOLID, released on the original Playstation, that Snake got his iconic look, and the game itself got its signature storytelling style. Definitely due to Kojima’s direction.
Personally, I am so stoked about Isaac’s casting! It’s like one of those things you don’t think about, but once it’s announced, you can’t help but think that it’s PERFECT! Not unlike when Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Tony Stark back in the day. I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember if I ever thought about who I’d want to play Iron Man in a movie, but when RDJ was announced all I could think was, “YES!!!”.
But one thing I am concerned about, in Variety’s report, it doesn’t sound like Hideo Kojima will be involved in the production. I don’t know if Sony Pictures invited him to participate & he declined or excluded him intentionally or unintentionally… but typically movies based on video games have sucked in the past and with the creator not involved, especially one as such an accomplished director, visual stylist and cinematic style… it’s definitely worrisome.
Either way though, definitely excited about this casting news, stoked a movie will be coming, and cautiously optimistic about the shape the final movie will take. As more news breaks, I’ll definitely let you know.
