That’s right kids, it’s official, WONDER WOMAN 1984 will be streaming on Christmas Day via HBO Max.
It’s something we’ve all been experiencing for almost a year now, but all our anticipated movies have been getting delayed and delayed again during this pandemic. And though more and more theatres opening, major markets in the US are still closed, so that’s a trend that doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon.
While some studios, like Disney, have been opting for a streaming premiere, most notably with MULAN, we’ve all been hungry for new movies.
Well, looks like Warner Bros. is going to give streaming a go. With WONDER WOMAN 1984, it will stream on HBO Max on Christmas Day AND open in theatres as well. And personally, I love this idea, and something I’ve been saying for a while now.
Like most businesses, I know theatres are hurting, and need new product, in this case, movies. But at the same time, presumably, Studios are worried about the return in a truncated market. So, hedging their bets to hold out for a post-pandemic world.
But, again, almost a year in, you can only delay so much. As for what I’ve been saying for a while? Knowing the studio/exhibitor relationship, but also being a consumer, it seems like premiering PVOD & theatres simultaneously seem like a no-brainer. And with that, re-release in a pos-pandemic world.
So, let me explain that. Premiering via stream and theatres at the same time provides opportunity for theatres to make money, those who feel comfortable going to the theatres, have that theatre experience, and for folks like me, can see it at home. And re-releasing post-pandemic, those who would resort for digital initially would definitely go for the theatre experience as well. So, you get a little double dip. Sounds pretty solid.
Maybe that’s just me. Haha.
But enough of that soap box. WONDER WOMAN!!!
What’s making this news for WONDER WOMAN even more awesome? Unlike Disney’s upcharge for MULAN, there will be no premium fee for WONDER WOMAN if you’re opting for stream. Just have to be an HBO Max subscriber.
Not one? Well, grab that login from a friend!
Personally, I can’t wait for this movie to hit. The first one was a delight and one of my favorite DC movies of late. Now let’s see if Disney & MARVEL STUDIOS will stream BLACK WIDOW! Haha.
But to close this, here’s a tweet from director Patty Jenkins about the news:
