So that ‘BIG TROUBLE’ in Development, Not a Remake

I’m sure I was there with every other kid from the ’80s screaming in pain when we heard that Dwayne Johnson was developing a “remake” of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Nothing against The Rock, 9 times out of 10, I have nothing but a fun ass time in his movies… though, you couldn’t pay me to go see RAMPAGE… but let’s just count that the 1 out of 10, haha.

But BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA… well, like any movie a person has an attachment to, there’s always a feeling that it shouldn’t be remade. And for me, BIG TROUBLE is definitely one of those movies.

Well, I got some news kids, Johnson’s movie isn’t a remake.

CBR is reporting that Johnson’s take on BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA won’t be a remake, but a continuation of the universe. Hiram Garcia, President of Production at Seven Bucks Productions (Johnson’s production company) says,

We are in the process of developing that and, let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake Big Trouble in Little China…

…You can’t remake a classic like that so, what we’re planning to do, is we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe of Big Trouble in Little China. Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play that character.

And personally, I couldn’t be more excited for that news! Because I wholeheartedly agree with Garcia, in that there are some roles you just can’t recast. Not only Jack Burton, but the whole cast is just iconic to me, it would hurt to see those roles with different faces.

But if you’re still rolling your eyes at the idea of building off the original movie, and continuing the story? Well, I get that, but let me just offer, JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE.

Cause everything I’m writing here about BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA are all feelings I had about JUMANJI. But the idea with JUMANJI was the same here, they continued the story, didn’t remake it. And I have to say, I had so much fun watching JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE! Though, I thought the use of Guns ‘n Roses’ ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ was a little misused… I mean, pretty that song was about drug addiction, PERFECT for a family movie! Haha. But, that’s neither here nor there… the point here is that they approached JUMANJI with the same strategy as they seem to be for BIG TROUBLE, and having enjoyed WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, they definitely have some good faith built with me. And honestly looking forward to seeing what form the movie takes!
