That’s right Boys and Girls, Warner Brothers Japan has debut a bizarrely AMAZING trailer for an upcoming anime, BATMAN NINJA!

Check it out below.

Yes, that’s right, that is the Batman Universe, friend and foe, reimagined in Medieval Japan, courtesy of character designer, Takashi Okazaki.

Supposedly the plot revolves around how Batman, his allies, and a handful of villains from Gotham get displaced in time, and land in Medieval Japan. While there, they become involved, willing or not, in a local power struggle.

And it sounds like it won’t be a garden variety superhero story, according to director Jumpei Mizusaki has described the film as how Japan sees Batman, and ot the other way around. Though at that mention, I couldn’t help but think of Bhp Kidd’s BAT-MANGA… though I’m pretty sure that’s not what Jumpei is talking about. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

But honestly, if anything, you had me at Batman/ninja/anime, because the trailer looks bad ass!

Though one thing that is disheartening to see, and something I’m seeing more and more in Japanese animation… the transition to CG. Where in the States, animation transition to CG has been more shaded/shaped ala Pixar… Japan’s animation industry seems to be taking CG and working to mimic 2D animation. One can only imagine to achieve complex shot/sequences, while working to keep the illusion of 2D to create a more exciting experience.

Which is all well and good. But I miss my hand-draw animation.

EITHER WAY, BATMAN NINJA looks bad ass, and is expected to hit Blu-Ray sometime in 2018.
