Shortly after production began on Disney’s sequel to their 1964 film, MARY POPPINS, the studio released the first image of Emily Blunt as the beloved nanny.

Check it out below!

Now I’ve always had misgivings about, among other things, producing sequels to classics that really don’t need them. And admittingly I rolled my eyes a little bit when I heard about this sequel. But I have to admit, Emily Blunt looks absolutely enchanting as the beloved character.

MARY POPPING RETURNS is directed and produced by Rob Marshall, the film also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. The film, which introduces three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson, also features Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury. The film is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books.

As for plot details? After Michael (Ben Whishaw) suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep).

Despite any misgivings I have about sequels to classics, this movie has an amazing director and cast. I have to admit, I’m a little excited about MARY POPPINS RETURNS.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS is targeting a Christmas 2018 release.
